SegWit (Segregated Witness) is a protocol upgrade which changes the way data is stored in the blockchain implemented on Bitcoin the 23 of August, 2017. Bitcoin was facing a roadblock with a scaling problem (Approaching the maximum block size of 1MB), therefore restricting the number of transactions it could process to approximately 7 per second, and the inability to implement more layers to the bitcoin network due to the not being able to modify the structure of the data in the transaction blocks. SegWit protocol allowed to separate the signature information (Digital signature confirming the owner of the bitcoins is indeed the author of the transaction) from the base transaction block. This means Bitcoin could now reduce the size of the transaction blocks by separating the signature information and, in addition, allow the base transaction block to be modified by new protocols such as the Lightning Network (instant payments without having to wait for block confirmation).
🇪🇸 SegWit(Segregated Witness) es una actualización de protocolo que cambia la manera en que los datos se guardan en la blockchain implementada el 23 de Agosto, 2017. Bitcoin se encontraba con varios obstáculos en su camino; el problema del factor de escala (el tamaño de los bloques en Bitcoin se aproximaban a el máximo de 1MB), restringiendo en consequencia el número de transacciones que podia procesar a aproximadamente 7 por segundo, y la incapacidad para implementar más capas a la red de Bitcoin debido a no poder modificar la estructura de los datos en los bloques de transacciones. El protocolo SegWit permitió separar la información sobre la firma digital (hasta ahora incluida en las propias transacciones) de los bloques de transacciones. Esto significa que Bitcoin consigió reducir el tamaño de los bloques y ademas permitió la modificación de los bloques de transacciones mediante nuevos protocolos como el Lightning Network (pagos instantaneos sin tener que esperar a la confirmación de los bloques).
