A New Take on the BHAG

I have been hugely enjoying a new book by Michael Michaelowicz over the past few days - a book called Clockwise, Design your business to run itself.

It is recommended reading for any business owner who is looking at how to scale a business by adding more systems etc. It really focuses on putting into practice all the good stuff that you learn from reading Michael Gerber's The E-myth.

One aspect of the book that really resonated with me was Michael's reference to the 'BHAG' - a phrase coined by Tom Peters, which refers to having a Big Hairy Audacious Goal.

This is a goal that appears almost insurmountable at the outset of your business (it is so ambitious) but something can help keep driving the business forward over the longer term.

What I like about Michael's take on this is the extra element he adds, namely:

"NOBILITY"
He stresses that now, more than ever, businesses need to have a noble cause built into their higher quest - into their BHAG.

I see nobility as sorely missing in today's businesses. We need to restore trust in entrepreneurship and business in the current climate with questions increasingly raised around the success of capitalism in today's world. To have a quest, or an overarching goal, for your business that is both stretching and has some sort of noble element to it - improving the world in some way - has to be a great step forward for every business.

So let's think about how we can add some overarching noble goal to our businesses as we strive to, not only improve our businesses for our team members (and of course ourselves!) but also to put a dent in the world in a positive way.
