Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin (born June 6, 1799, killed in a duel in St. Petersburg on February 10, 1837), Russian poet, playwright and prose writer, critic and literary theorist, historian and publicist, one of the most famous literary figures of the first half of the 19th century. Today marks the 219th anniversary of his birth. Even during Pushkin's lifetime, his reputation as the greatest national Russian poet was formed.
