Hello Steemers!
My name is Amanda Maccagnan, I'm a mixed media artist from Toronto, Ontario & this is my first post to Steemit!
I wanted to show you guys what I've been up to, I try to be diverse through different mediums, everything from stained glass, to painting, to live performance and even in virtual reality. I've found that in trying to express myself and my artistic vision, it is a gift to work in different ways with different tools of expression, and I try to be as free as I can be to JUST do art for a living!
"John Waters" - Tiffany Stained Glass Portrait - 24" x 36" with industrial chain
TIMELAPSE AT BOTTOM OF POST
This is a dedication to John Waters, it was completed in stained glass, using over 10 different types of glass imported from various places around the world. It was commissioned to be exhibited in the 'Super Trash' show in 2016. It is still available for sale. It was a lot of work, 37 hours to be exact, let's have a look at the build process!
Sketch out the final piece at scale. I actually created two pieces but this post is going to focus on the John Waters, the other is Divine.
Started cutting and grinding, and laying down the first pieces! I like
to cut an entire colour at once, generally the darkest colour, because its the most challenging!!
Now working on some of the other bigger area’s, always making sure that everything is snug and tight in it’s proper place in order to achieve solid line work and that everything remains perfectly square.
Most of the pieces are now cut, and fit interlocking and but usually require multiple stages of grinding to make the line work as tight as possible. They will also be lined with copper foil that will act as a base for the lead to grip on to during the soldering stage.
Starting to wrap the glass pieces with copper foil and attach it to all the pieces creating a totally uniform copper edge. This part is relaxing, gives the fingers a break from the grinding and cutting. You can see the intricacy in the eyes in this photo, love it!
Still foiling, but its starting to come together now, this foil will be soldered onto to join the pieces, and create flowing uniform lines. It will be treated with a pewter patina and turn the lead in the solder to solid black.
Patina complete on the face, the eyes come alive with some light shining through the background.
Final finished piece in the window! Final dimensions are 24" x 36” and the last thing to do is to attach the ‘super trashy’ industrial chain to the top of the piece for hanging! I’m thrilled with how it turned out and people seem to really like it too!
Here’s a bonus image of me with my creation! And also the Divine piece that was hung beside it. I love the way it turned out and I think the chains give it an extra bit of punch to really send this piece over the edge!!
