A prolonged pause is the common term for that moment in a conversation between two people when, suddenly, the moment arrives when either one's next word is somewhere on the edge of the foul line and could take the conversation in a completely different direction than expected, and both remain silent, pondering their deep thoughts in silence. It's like an approaching storm, from which a chain-link fence protects you.
