Handsome Emu.
I was more than a little wary getting close enough to capture this handsome emu, but I'm glad I risked life and limb to snap this shot.
You're probably laughing at my trepidation as you gaze at those big, brown, innocent eyes. But hey! I've seen how fast these guys run and those beaks are extremely sturdy. Wouldn't you agree?
I'm sure there are some Emu lovers out there in Hiveland, so these images are for you. And in case you are wondering, I applied a little digital editing to my original photograph to achieve the dark green coloured background and soft texture.
As a member of Fine Art America, I get to see my photography and artwork on a variety of products, so I thought I'd take this opportunity to share them with you today.
EMU GREETING CARDS:
Putting my cautiousness aside; these guys are hard to capture because they are not still for more than a few seconds at a time. This one appeared to be very inquisitive and wanted to get to know me more than I wanted to get to know him.
"Keep your distance Em!" I told him as he threatened to eat my camera.
You can't really you blame me for being on the defensive after allowing this big guy a brief moment to invade my personal space can you? The risks I take in order to get a decent shot!
And to emphasize my point........Emus (Dromaius Novaehollandiae) are the second largest living birds (height wise) after the ostrich.
Perhaps I could overcome my fear if I had one of these cushions? I could lie down with my head on his face and pretend he was a cute koala. Sweet dreams Trudee!
And if I needed more convincing of the docile nature of emus, I could hang
this shower curtain up over my bath and try hard to ignore that penetrating glare whilst taking a shower.
Who am I kidding? That is definitely NOT going to happen. I enjoy my showers too much to invite this peeping Tom into my bathroom.
ROUND BEACH TOWEL:
Well, if he wasn't welcome in my bathroom, then maybe I could take him to the beach with me ? But then again, I don't think I'd be totally relaxed, lying on the beach, soaking up the sun, listening to the surf crash upon the shore whilst obliterating his view completely in the process. That wouldn't be fair would it?
TOTE BAG:
A tote bag with his image on it would be a great way for me to become less intimidated by him. And besides, he could help me look for some good savings as I browsed the shops. (As if I needed any help filling a shopping bag.)
Did you know that Emus are Australia's largest native birds and are characterized by their soft feathers, and long necks and legs. Don't you just love that soft, fuzzy hair adorning his head and neck?
FACE MASK:
He looks alright on this face mask but I'd love him to crack a smile. Anyone know any good emu jokes?
Emus cover great distances when necessary and live off insects and plants, but can survive for lengthy periods without eating. They don't drink often but when they do, they consume water in huge quantities.
METAL PRINT:
My final image features 'my' Emu on a Metal background. When I have finally become very comfortable in his presence I might just purchase one of these prints for my living room.
After all, Emus are considered to be important cultural icons of Australia and feature on our coat of arms and a few different coins. They are also a prominent feature of Indigenous Australian mythology
No ordinary birds, these Emus!
