Origin stories of many cultures underscore that water is a building block of life.
Access to water – just taken for granted in many countries by turning on a tap – is not so simple in many parts of the world. If clean, safe water is available, it can take hours each day just to retrieve and store this life commodity.
A paper published in 2019 reported that more than 785 million people did not have access to basic water services and more than 884 million did not have safe water to drink.
World Water Day was established by the UN in 1993 to remind us of water’s value, to raise awareness and advocate for how we can better manage clean, freshwater.
Water is so foundational for life that the UN General Assembly in July 2020 declared that clean drinking water and sanitation is a human right.
This year’s theme of this World Water Day 2022 is Groundwater: Making the Invisible Visible
