Hola, mis amigos. Que placer saludarlos. El sitio del cual les hablaré hoy queda relativamente cerca (a unos tres kilómetros) de mi casa y siempre tuve curiosidad por visitarlo, hasta hoy que finalmente me decidí. Aproveché la proximidad y fui caminando, de paso me sirvió como ejercicio matutino. Siempre había escuchado rumores sobre Kuquine. Que si los túneles secretos, que si las fiestas de locura, que si el dictador Fulgencio Batista (último presidente de Cuba antes de 1959) planeaba sus fechorías en una biblioteca llena de bustos de próceres (José Martí, Abraham Lincoln, Máximo Gómez y Simón Bolívar, Ghandi al lado de Churchill, y a Stalin flanqueado por Rommel y Juana de Arco como si fueran sus compinches de parranda). Un sincretismo político de locos. Sin dudas un sujeto con un humor bien particular. >Hello, my friends. Así que esta mañana, armada de mi curiosidad y con la excusa de un reportaje, me fui para allá. La dirección de esta finca de 17 caballerías de extensión, es casi un trabalenguas: al borde de la Autopista del Mediodía, entre la Carretera Central y la carretera de Cantarranas, rumbo al Guatao y muy cerca de Punta Brava, mi pueblo. Kuquine era solo una de las residencias privadas de Fulgencio Batista. Según me contaron los trabajadores del lugar, el nombre de Kuquine viene de su esposa. Dicen que ella le decía "Kuqui" en la intimidad, y de ahí salió lo de "Kuquine" . Al parecer el tipo tenía un romanticismo de telenovela. >So this morning, armed with my curiosity and using a report as an excuse, I headed over there. The address of this estate, which spans 17 caballerías of land, is almost a tongue twister: on the edge of the Autopista del Mediodía, between the Carretera Central and the Cantarranas road, heading towards Guatao and very close to Punta Brava, my town. Kuquine was just one of Fulgencio Batista's private residences. According to the workers there, the name Kuquine comes from his wife. They say she used to call him "Kuqui" in private, and that's where "Kuquine" came from. Apparently, the guy had a soap-opera kind of romanticism.

Lo primero que ves al entrar es un espejo de agua y una capillita. Aqui se respira aire puro por todas partes. El verde de la naturaleza reina en todo su esplendor. La casa principal es una belleza. Tiene tejas rojas y unos portales con columnas de caoba que son una maravilla. Caminar por ahí es como estar en una película. El tiempo se ha comido los lujos, pero la estructura todavía se impone. >The first thing you see upon entering is a reflecting pool and a small chapel. You breathe pure air everywhere here. The green of nature reigns in all its splendor. The main house is a beauty. It has red tiles and porches with mahogany columns that are marvelous. Walking there is like being in a movie. Time has eroded the luxuries, but the structure still stands imposing.

Hoy, la finca se llama "Comunidad Libertad" y ha tenido más vidas que un gato. Allí dentro hay varias viviendas. Después del triunfo de la Revolución, fue escuela, instituto tecnológico, albergue y, en un giro inesperado, hoy es un centro recreacional. Cuentan los que saben, que hace años, por solo 300 pesos en moneda nacional, uno podía darse el lujo de pasar la noche en la propia habitación de Batista y hasta usar su inodoro. Lastimosamente, ya no es tan barato, ahora cuesta mas de mil pesos la noche, pero el lugar sigue teniendo ese encanto de ruina con pasado glamuroso. >Today, the estate is called "Comunidad Libertad" (Freedom Community) and has had more lives than a cat. There are several houses inside. After the triumph of the Revolution, it was a school, a technological institute, a shelter, and, in an unexpected turn, today it is a recreational center. Those in the know say that years ago, for only 300 Cuban pesos, one could afford the luxury of spending the night in Batista's very own room and even use his toilet. Sadly, it's not that cheap anymore; now it costs over a thousand pesos a night, but the place still has that charm of a ruin with a glamorous past.

Aunque no me permitieron subir (vean que escalera tan preciosa), supe que la mansión cuenta con doce dormitorios, cada uno con su baño, y el único con balcón era la de Batista. La piscina, que era la envidia de todos, sigue siendo el centro del recreo, aunque los que la vieron en sus tiempos de gloria dicen que nada que ver con su estado actual. En el momento de mi visita estaba vacía. La piscina estaba dividida en dos secciones: una para niños y otra para adultos. Más allá, pasando por el puente de estilo japonés que atravesaba la piscina, estaban las cabañas, el merendero, con un bar de madera y reluciente níkel, encontrándose entre los elementos decorativos de los jardines, fuentes y tinajones camagüeyanos. >Although they didn't allow me to go upstairs (look at that beautiful staircase), I learned that the mansion has twelve bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, and the only one with a balcony was Batista's. The pool, which was the envy of all, remains the center of recreation, although those who saw it in its glory days say it's nothing like its current state. At the time of my visit, it was empty. The pool was divided into two sections: one for children and one for adults. Further on, crossing the Japanese-style bridge that went over the pool, were the cabins, the snack bar, with a wooden bar and shiny nickel, all amidst decorative garden elements, fountains, and large Camagüeyan earthenware jars.

Si hablamos de rarezas, cuentan que Batista tenía complejo de Napoleón. Se refería al golpe de estado del10 de marzo como su "regreso de la isla de Elba" y guardaba como un tesoro un telescopio y unas pistolas que fueron del Emperador. En una vitrina, sus condecoraciones militares, y en un cuarto secreto, al que llamaban "el cuarto de los tesoros", se llegaron a encontrar joyas y dinero por un montón de millones. Muchas alhajas aparecieron en cajas de madera, olvidadas entre libros viejos cuando ya Batista había salido cargando todo lo que pudo el 1ro de enero del 59. >Speaking of oddities, they say Batista had a Napoleon complex. He referred to the coup d'état of March 10th as his "return from the island of Elba" and treasured a telescope and some pistols that supposedly belonged to the Emperor. In a display case, his military decorations, and in a secret room, which they called "the treasure room," jewels and money worth many millions were once found. Many pieces of jewelry appeared in wooden boxes, forgotten among old books, after Batista had already gotten the hell out with everything he could on January 1st, 1959.

Lo mejor de todo es que, pese al abandono y a las capas de historia que le han caído encima, Kuquine todavía respira misterio. Se rumora, y siempre hay un alma que te lo jura (aunque los trabajadores no me lo confirmaron)que hay un pasadizo subterráneo que conecta la casa principal con la antigua Ciudad Militar de Columbia por donde logro escapar. Serán cuentos, pero mientras paseas entre las columnas de caoba, no puedes evitar mirar al suelo y preguntarte si por ahí no pasaría el dictador huyendo. >The best part is that, despite the neglect and the layers of history that have fallen upon it, Kuquine still breathes mystery. It is rumored, and there's always someone who swears it's true (although the workers didn't confirm it to me), that there is an underground passage connecting the main house to the old Ciudad Militar de Columbia (Columbia Military City) through which he managed to escape. It might be stories, but as you stroll among the mahogany columns, you can't help but look at the ground and wonder if that's not where the dictator fled.

Al final, me queda la sensación de haber pisado un lugar donde se gestó un golpe de estado, donde un hombre que empezó siendo sargento taquígrafo terminó queriéndose rodear de reyes y emperadores. Kuquine no es solo una finca vieja y medio caída, es un monumento al poder, la trampa y el ridículo, todo en uno. Valió la pena la escapada, aunque sea solo para sentarse en el borde del muro del portal y pensar: "De aquí salió el tipo que se fue por la puerta de atrás dejando un país entero patas arriba". >In the end, I'm left with the feeling of having set foot in a place where a coup d'état was conceived, where a man who started as a stenographer sergeant ended up wanting to surround himself with kings and emperors. Kuquine is not just an old, somewhat dilapidated estate; it's a monument to power, deceit, and absurdity, all in one. The outing was worth it, if only to sit on the edge of the porch wall and think: "This is where the guy who left through the back door, leaving the whole country in shambles, came from."
