News has been circulating on social media about trees being cut down to pave the way for an expressway project. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources approved the clearing, which ironically comes at the peak of the summer heat. This action sparked criticism from both environmentalists and ordinary citizens.
It is disheartening because flooding is a yearly problem, especially in the metro, and now there are fewer trees to absorb the water. More than 600 trees, which had stood there for 30 to 40 years, were cut down. One cannot blame the public for suspecting corruption. The environment department faces a lack of trust, as corruption remains prevalent across various government agencies today.
While it was noted that replacement seedlings have been planted, they are still very young. There is a high chance they will not survive, and even if they do, it will take ages for them to grow into mature trees.
