There are places that you visit because they are beautiful. There are places that you visit because of the food, the culture, or the history. And then there are places that you visit because they have something that no other place in the country has. For our Chiang Mai trip, it was a bit of everything, and one of the most memorable parts of it was our visit to Doi Inthanon National Park, the home of the highest spot in Thailand.
I think there is something exciting about being able to say that we stood at the highest point of a country. It’s not everyday that you get to experience that. Doi Inthanon is literally the top of Thailand, and because of that, the whole atmosphere felt different from the other places we visited.
The first thing that surprised me was the temperature. The elevation is around 8,366 feet above sea level, and when we arrived, the temperature was only 12 degrees Celsius. Coming from downtown Chiang Mai where the temperature can easily be around 27 to 32 degrees, this was a huge difference. If you don’t bring a jacket or thick clothing, you will literally freeze. LOL. I knew it would be colder because of the elevation, but I didn’t expect it to feel that cold.
This place is also known as one of the best spots to watch the sunrise. Unfortunately, we missed the perfect sunrise view because the sky was covered with thick clouds when we arrived. It was a little disappointing, but at the same time, the cloudy weather gave the place a more mysterious and dramatic mood. The mountains in the distance looked soft and layered, almost like a painting covered in mist.
The walk to the summit was another highlight for me. It felt otherworldly. The path going through the summit area was like walking inside a mini rainforest. There were thick trees, lush plants, moist air, and dew everywhere. The walkway was wet and slippery, so we had to be careful with every step. But I think that is also what made the experience more special. It wasn’t just a normal walk. It felt like the forest was alive, quiet, and breathing around us.
Since we arrived early, the shops were not open yet. We waited for a while until they finally opened, and that was when we had something warm to eat. We tried instant chicken porridge and had some hot coffee as well. It was very simple, but because of the cold weather, it felt so comforting. Sometimes these small moments become the best part of the trip. A hot drink, a cold morning, and a place far away from the usual city noise.
Another interesting part of the visit was going to the 5th Unit Reporting Post of the Thailand Air Force. It was my first time visiting something related to an actual air force site, so the experience felt surreal. They showcased some of the technology and equipment they use, and seeing those towers and facilities at such a high place made the whole visit feel even more unique.

We also visited the visitor center, where they showcased the natural flora and fauna of Doi Inthanon. It made me appreciate the park even more because it’s not only about being the highest spot. It is also a protected natural area full of life, from the forest trails to the plants and wildlife that make the mountain special.
Overall, our visit to the highest spot in Thailand was a mix of everything: beautiful nature, extreme cold weather, quiet forest walks, mountain views, and nice people we met along the way. It was a beautiful escape from the city and definitely one of the highlights of our Chiang Mai trip.
